“…it is not the blessing, it is not the healing, it is not the sanctification, it is not the thing, it is not the it that you want, but it is something better. It is “the Christ”; it is Himself.”
A.B. Simpson
Because I started driving before the internet, I sometimes choose to navigate without it.
A few weeks ago, I was driving home. It was late, it was dark, and I was following my pre-digital instinct east towards the freeway.
Everything seemed to be in order until I saw a street sign ahead that said “No outlet”. Unfortunately I had been going the wrong direction, and my analog intuition had led me to a dead end.
While my impulse to get to the freeway was correct – I was going about it the wrong way.
God has put a desire in each of our hearts to journey towards home.
In this month of January, many of us are seeking to cement new habits, new ways of living — with the best of intentions.
Perhaps you have a desire to learn more of the scriptures.
Or to begin to serve God in the local church.
To have healthier habits –
Or just be a better person.
In the moments of quiet — we sense the brokenness and lack in our lives. And if our hearts are open to the impulse of the Spirit of God — we respond, looking for something to make us more whole, less broken.
But what can make us more whole and less broken?
What can close the gap – between who we are — and the beauty and vast holiness of God?
It’s not a what — it’s a who.
The call of Jesus to every human heart is always a call to Himself.
It’s not a call to holiness, obedience, morality, self-sacrifice or a radical life. Its a call to Christ himself.
Every time Jesus calls a man or a woman – He calls them to Himself.
-To Peter and Andrew, Jesus said“Follow ME…” (Matthew 4:19)
– At the feast of tabernacles – Jesus cried out to the crowd “If anyone thirsts, let him come to ME and drink.” (John 7:37)
– To the scribes and Pharisees poised to stone a woman caught in adultery, Jesus said “I am the light of the world. He who follows ME shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12
The gap can only be filled by Christ Himself.
Follow Him — not a program, a preacher, or a spiritual discipline.
Drink of Him — not of information or knowledge.
The impulse in your heart is an impulse towards the person of Christ.
Don’t run toward any other thing.
