Leaving a Legacy

ImageLately, I’ve heard quite a few people speak about their desire to leave a legacy.

There is a godly group of men in my community who are meeting regularly to write letters to their children and wives– to ensure that, when they die someday, their thoughts, feelings and aspirations will be communicated to their families.

It’s a beautiful expression and to be admired.

The human race has always endeavored to leave a legacy — something that will live on when they are departed.

Whether it be a monument, a language, a culture, a business or political accomplishment, everyone wants to leave their mark. Everyone wants to be remembered.

Often times in God’s dealings with his people, He would threaten to leave them without a legacy or posterity because of their disobedience.

But as God’s people, our legacy isn’t only our achievements and family.

Our legacy isn’t just what people remember about us when we are gone — it’s the people who remember Jesus because of their dealings with us.

  • It’s the conversations we shared that led others into deeper obedience and intimacy with Christ.
  • It’s those individuals that are disciples and leaders because of our godly influence over them.
  • It’s those individuals who because of our influence — will go on to impact many others.

It’s a legacy that will last and grow for eternity.

Love your family (and teach them about Jesus), do great things in the world of men — but build a legacy that will reverberate into eternity.
