Writing His Desires

ImageToday is Saturday — which means I was in the kitchen this morning, making breakfast for my family, and listening to Rend Collective.

It was a bit like church in my kitchen this morning, as I listened to line after line of praise, worship and a group of young musicians who are determined to love and please God.

Rend Collective is a band from Ireland that writes thoughtful, purposeful worship full of rich doctrine and theology.

A line from one of their songs says

“…You are everything that is beautiful
Breathe your desires in me…

This was in striking contrast to another quote I read the other day
by Susan B. Anthony (An American Women’s Suffragist):

“I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do,
because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.”

True, men throughout history have used the name of Christ for all sorts of blasphemous and foolish things.
But for those who are truly His, who have  surrendered to Christ,
God does a beautiful thing:

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit
within you; I will take the heart of stone out of
your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)

While every Christian has far to go in the area of sanctification —
nonetheless, God is replacing our heart with His.
He is rooting out the desires that diverge from His.
And as we grow nearer to His heart, we find that He is giving us His desires.

Suddenly —
Compassion becomes our concern.
Personal Holiness becomes our desire.
Love becomes our banner.
Worship, word and prayer become our passion

And as we continue on this path — God often will put His Divine directions in our hearts as well.

We will be strangely drawn to ministries, strategic relationships etc that move us in the direction of His will.

Years ago, my wife and I had a conversation about a certain city in California that we would never want to live in or have much to do with.

A couple of years later — we were in full time vocational ministry in that very same city and contemplated buying a home there.

That was God supernaturally imposing His desires and directions on our life.
And it was a beautiful thing.

Where is your heart?
Are you seeking out the Lord?
Is He aligning your heart to His desires?

Be careful. As you seek Him out — He just might change the course of your life.
If you let Him, you’ll never regret it.
