divine discontent

…for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am… in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.  (Phil 4:11-12)

As a disciple of Christ — there should be within you a secret that sustains you.

Growing into maturity — we learn that the secret is Christ himself. Whether I have much or
little it does not matter for I have Christ.

Colossians 3:4 puts it this way: “Christ, who is our life…”

When everything else is stripped away — what is your life?

I have found life, when it’s all said and done, to be a disappointment.
That is, if your expecting to be fulfilled in the the material things, the relationships, the pursuits and pleasures of it you will be disappointed.

You get that thing that you wanted, and it’s not so great after all.
You have that relationship — good as it is, and the other person fails you.
You get where you wanted to be, and wish you were somewhere else.

But Christ — never fails.
And when He IS your life — there is a great ability to be content, truly in any circumstance.
With much or little.

But there is a Divine Discontent that should be cultivated in us.

What? Contradiction.
No.

God commands us to pursue more.
More of Him.
More of His nature.
More of His sanctifiying work.
More of His gifts and ministry.

– But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. (I Tim 6:11)

One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.
Psalm 27:4

– If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.  (I Tim 3:1)

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. (I Cor 14:1)

When it comes to your life — let Christ BE your life, and there will be contentment in it.
And joy even.

But is there a Divine Discontent?

Are you zealous for more of God?
For more of His gifts?
For more ministry?

You should be.
It’s right.
It’s good.

And it’s dangerous not to be.
When we allow our contentment to overtake us, we stop we growing.

Pursue.
Desire.
Chase after the One who IS your life.
