a word to pastors

The wind blows where it wishes,
and you hear the sound of it,
but cannot tell where it comes
from and where it goes.
So is everyone who
is born of the Spirit.”

John 3:8

This verse beautifully illustrates the way the Holy Spirit works:

He moves where HE wishes.
He goes where HE wants to go.

As Jesus told Nicodemus — “You must be born again.
And if we are born again — we are born of the Spirit.

The way that we used to be was like this:

-WE moved in the direction we wanted.
-WE made plans, decisions in whatever direction that seemed best.

But no longer.
Because we are born of the Spirit.

HE now sets the course of my life personally.

I must move where HE moves.
I must go where HE goes.

I think we realize this personally, but does this translate to the way we do ministry?

I address this post to Pastors because I think we need to hear this.

Is your ministry born of the Spirit?

If you are a good pastor — you probably have a preaching schedule.
You have planned out approximately what you will be teaching for the
year and how much you will cover each week.

Your service is always perfectly planned.
The number of songs that will be sung.
Some coordinated to tie in with the theme of the message.
Multimedia tuned to the phrases and points you will be pressing.

God is a God of order. (I Cor 14:40)
Amen.

But — is your ministry in tune with the Spirit?

How do you approach sermon prep?
Do you read every commentary known to man — or do you wait on the Lord?
Do you determine how many verses or topics you will cover,
or do you let the Lord determine that for you?

Do you leave room in your message for the Spirit to work freely?
To deviate from the plan, from the notes? To speak.

Do you leave time in your service for people to respond to what
the Spirit has been speaking to them? To move among the people?

Where is the wind blowing?
Do you see the effects of it?

Where is the Spirit moving in your church?
Where is HE moving in your ministry?
Where is He moving you personally?

Let all things be done decently and in order,
but let all things be born of the Spirit.
