the anatomy of passion

I got an email from a friend asking this question:
How do I go from being comfortable where I am at with God to burning with passion?

That’s a great question.

I don’t think there is always an “easy” answer to things.
But – when I find myself getting “comfortable” or lacking that passion –
I usually cry out to the Lord – something along the lines of Psalm 51:
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast [right] spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
And sustain me with a willing spirit.

Hosea 6:3 says this:

“So let us know, let us press on to know the LORD.
His going forth is as certain as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the rain,
Like the spring rain watering the earth.”

When I am comfortable or passion-less, I don’t feel like making a great effort.
But I have learned to press on, and to press in to the Lord.
When my heart feels like laying around and not trying – that’s when I need to make
the effort to meet with the Lord in prayer and in the Word.

 I need Him.

And this is what I have found to be true:
In His presence there is fullness of joy.

I begin to thank the Lord (even if it’s difficult at first).

And I begin to praise Him. (Psalm 100:4)

As I do this – my heart begins to fill with passion and joy.

And the more often that I do this, that I spend time in his presence – thanking, praising and worshipping Jesus,

the more often I am filled with joy and passion.

And naturally – I begin to want to know more. To want to grow.
To want to serve.

And God drops opportunities in my lap to talk to people about Him.
And as I see the cool things God is doing, my passion grows again.

Pressing in to the Lord breeds passion as I encounter him.
That intimacy with the Lord brings me to the place of sensitivity to His voice.
Obedience to that voice increases my faith as I see Him work.
Intimacy. Sensitivity. Hearing from the Lord. Faith restored.
All of these are components of passion.

But passion always begins with adoration and fixation on Jesus Christ.

Fix your eyes on Jesus, press in to Him – and there will be passion.
