Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other times,
‘Samuel! Samuel!’ and Samuel answered,
‘Speak for your servant hears.’ (I Samuel 3:10)
The Lord came.
We sing “Come Lord Jesus” during worship.
We sing “Come to us”.
These are great requests.
But perhaps the Lord has come even when we were not seeking it or expecting it.
Maybe He is here before we even ask to see Him.
He is the one who pursues us.
The Lord stood.
To me — this speaks of the Lord’s patience and determination to remain.
Maybe we don’t realize the Lord is come — but He isn’t going to go away.
He can wait (although He shouldn’t have to).
Could it be that the Lord is more willing and determined to speak to me than I am willing
or determined to hear from Him?
The Lord called.
The Lord is calling me.
Not calling me to something (although He may).
Not calling me to be something (Although He does).
But just calling me.
Calling my name — longing to be in relationship with me.
This is a picture of Grace in all of it’s absurdity.
It would be as if I was calling out to a worm, longing to be in fellowship
with the slimy little beast.
The wonder isn’t even that God is calling me —
it’s that He is calling at all.
That He is calling any of us.
Why would He want to have fellowship with Us?
The psalmist said it best:
What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? (Ps 8:4)
I don’t know why — but I know it’s true.
There is a God.
Who comes.
Who stands.
And who calls.
