On Saturday I took my family on a trip up to the local mountains. As we descended, my soon-to-be-five-year old daughter was feeling kinda queasy (or so she said), so I pulled over at a turnout. We got out of the car and looked over the San Gorgonio Pass. There below us we saw a train.
The whole train. It was quite long, but because of our vantage point high above it — we could see the begining, the middle and the end of the train all at the same time.
The big picture. It was great teaching moment, as I explained to a little girl how God sees us and our lives like that train — begining to end, all at once.
It’s not a new concept, but for me, the illustration before my eyes seemed to give me a new clarity on the concept.
Lately, I have been reading about and meditating on the nature of God, his character, who He is. And it totally blows my mind. Who is this God? Who can see everything at once? I’m astonished and amazed.
I think that most often, we feel in life, like we are waiting at a Railroad crossing. We see this infinite train before us. We feel the discomfort of waiting — even feeling like we are going to miss out on something, be late for an appointment perhaps.
How absurd it would be to start to cry. To protest.
“It’s not fair!” Why is this happening to me. I will be at this crossing forever.
I may die here. “Or we wonder if there is any end at all.
But God — patiently, perfectly, omnisciently sees where we are right now, what’s coming next, and the begining and the end all in an instant.
And He’s not suprised or concerned.
Did you know that with God — there isn’t any yesterdays, or tomorrows?
There is only now.
That’s why Father, Son and Spirit in unison cry out:
“I AM that I AM”.
He is the One — eternal, immortal, invisible, and All mighty — and the One who sees your today, your tomorrow and your future and holds it in the palm of His hand.
How great is our God.
