Yesterday was a beautiful day. Cool. Foggy. A light mist.
It was everything I’ve been hoping for since July.
I truly love the Fall.
I long for it.
I love and long for many things.
In the past week (in addition to Autumn weather) — I’ve longed for old friends, favorite meals, sleep, for some things to change, and for others to always stay the same.
We love, long for – pursue so many things.
They promise happiness, peace, rest, security, fun, comfort — you name it. We figure that once the pursued object is obtained the promised reward will be as well.
But alas, the rewards are fleeting, and the hope behind the thing pursued is elusive.
This isn’t an exercise in fatalism.
I love the Fall. I love Old Friends. I love a good meal.
But what we are really seeking — isn’t these things at all.
It’s God.
As Pascal said — there is a God-shaped hole.
Every desire we have, only points to the greater desire for fellowship with God our Father, with Jesus our Savior, and with the Holy Spirit the comforter.
I am a firm believer in enjoying the good things that God has made for us.
But at the same time — I realize a propensity in me, and in us, to make the mistake into thinking that the things on earth will satisfy the hunger we have for heaven.
Our minds are too little. It’s not our fault really.
It’s just the way we are.
But the longing in my heart, and in yours, friend — can only be satisfied in Christ.
